I got an email today from this Chinese case manufacturer. They make carbon fiber and fiberglass guitar cases. Has anyone seen one? |

Howard, I'm always interested in checking out new caes. Like everyone else, I want cases that look good, stand up to abuse, and don't cost as much as the guitar. Any info you have will be welcomed. Craig S. |

I sometimes go to a Chinese restaurant. But the cases they have their wouldn't fit the guitar too well. I 'll ask next time I go...
On a serious note...didn't someone say (more than once) that the flaw in fiberglass/molded/abs/whatever cases was that they "sealed" the instrument in and therefore led to all sorts of bad things happening?

Don't you want a good seal if you are going to use an in-case humidifier? A leaky case is a case that is at room humidity. |

Yes I agree Mike. But I seem to remember someone saying that the guitar could then Steam like being in one of those ziploc bags. perhaps a mold issue. Even though we want consistant humidity we still want some fresh air? the molded cases are just that...moldy. Hey, I didn't say it, I was just repeating like a dumb parrot.

It's probably like a house, or a car. If you make it completely water tight you trap moisture or condensation in. This worsens a situation where evaporation cannot escape, and produces mold problems. This was discovered a few years back when new technology that made houses water tight led to many a lawsuit. There must be ventilation. |

Probably could drill a couple holes in the case if you wanted to vent it but I'll bet that any guitar case will allow some moisture transfer either way. Nelson |

OK, airtight cases are an interesting issue. If you humidify your case (or even if you don't) and it is exposed to cold air, you will get an increase in relative humidity inside the case, and possibly condensation on the inside of its outer wall. That will be more likely if it is airtight. Exposure to warm air may briefly drop the RH, but it will come back up about as quickly as the air in the case warms, from evaporation from the humidifier medium. If the case is not humidified and it gets warm, it will drop the RH inside the case. So . . . probably a good thing to use a case humidifier if you expect heat, and not if you expect cold. And maybe better to have a little air transfer if you are going from warm to cold? Hey, has anyone seen one of those Sonic Composite cases? |

I saw a case that looked very much like that at a jam session in Atlanta last weekend. It was somewhat floppy until it was closed and latched and then it was quite stiff and rigid. I did'nt get a real close look and don't know if it was in fact a Sonic case. Paul Woolson and Tim Mcknight were there also and may have gotten more of a look than me. |

Interesting little feature 
Sorry Howard, I've never seen one. They sort of look like a Calton though, but doesn't look like it's more "suportive" on the inside versus the Calton 
Do you have a rough cost on these? |

Those Sonic cases look pretty nice. I like to use of carbon fiber...strong and light. I'd be interesting in seeing their price list as well. |

Howard, as John H pointed out, there was a guy in atlanta that had an Eastman in on of those cases. I had a pretty lengthy discussion with him about it. He opened it up and showed me the flimsiness of it. The thing was a-floppin' around all over the place. When it was closed, it lined up with all seams pretty well and became pretty rigid. The floppiness was enough to make me pretty nervous about it though. He said he paid $195 for it. |

Paul, was that case made by Sonic? I have seen the Eastman case that looks like one of those and I thought it was not strong enough. |

Sorry, Howard, I don't know that for a fact. I based my comments on what John H said. (and after re-reading it he didn't really say that it was a Sonic Case at all) So perhaps I don't have any experience with Sonic Cases and really souldn't have commented. |
